Product Description
In this lesson, we study Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week, the holiest of all weeks in the year for Catholics. Palm Sunday, also called the Second Sunday of the Passion, marks Christ's triumphant yet misunderstood entry into Jerusalem and begins Holy Week. Fulfilled in the prophecy of Zacharias 9:9-10, Jesus enters the city riding a donkey, hailed by crowds expecting a political Messiah.
The day begins with the Blessing of the Palms—symbolic of both biblical victory and later suffering—followed by a procession and the chanting of the Passion narrative from Matthew’s Gospel during Mass. The procession recalls Old Testament customs from Leviticus and II Machabees, where palm branches were used in religious celebrations. Palms are blessed with prayers for sanctification and divine protection and then distributed to the faithful, often kissed and kept at home above crucifixes or in sick call sets. In places without palms, pussy willows may be used. The day has also been called “Fig Sunday” in reference to Christ cursing the barren fig tree—a warning to those who reject Him. Palm Sunday unites themes of kingship, sacrifice, judgment, and eternal hope.
