David Prepares to Fight Goliath
As David prepared to fight Goliath, David needed to prepare his weapon. He used his sling, which is a rope with a pocket in it, and five smooth stones to fire at the giant. The pocket of the sling holds the stones. As he prepared to fight Goliath, David practiced swinging the sling to hurl the stones at Goliath, his Philistine enemy. David chose smooth stones so they would fly straight. Rough stones would curve in the air. He kept the stones in a pocket on his belt called a scrip. This helped him keep the stones close to him as he fought Goliath.
“And he took his staff, which he had always in his hands: and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them into the shepherd’s scrip, which he had with him, and he took a sling in his hand, and went forth against the Philistine.” 1 Samuel 17:40
