After giving birth to Jesus, Mary laid Him in a manger at the stable the Holy Family stayed in. A manger is a long bucket used to hold food for animals. A stable is a house for animals like horses, cows, goats, and sheep.

Since Mary and Joseph were travelling, they could not find room at an inn to stay in. So they had to stay in a stable, and lay Jesus in a manger when He was just born. Jesus gives us a good example on being humble by being born into a lowly place.

“And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him up in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.”  Luke 2:7
